Aterciopelados

Biography

[Aterciopelados]

Propelled by the smoky voice of Andrea Echeverri, Aterciopelados is one of the most imaginative bands to emerge from Latin America.

Bassist and songwriter Hector Buitrago was the leader of hardcore rock band Le Pesitilencia, while Echeverri came into music through art school. Aterciopelados' first albums were straight rockers, although the band's second disc El Dorado started incorporating more traditional influences.

On the band's fourth album, Caribe Atomico, Aterciopelados radically transformed its sound, fooling newcomers into thinking the duo was a trip-hop troupe.

Caribe Atomico and its predecessor, La Pipa de la Paz, both garnered Grammy nominations for Best Latin Alternative Album.

Aterciopelados toured the United States in 2000 as part of the Watcha Tour, and in 2001, the band released its fifth album, Gozo Poderoso.
