Buffalo Daughter

Biography

[Buffalo Daughter]

Mixing obtuse guitar rock with healthy doses of sampling and analog synthesizers, Buffalo Daughter became one of many Japanese indie band to be signed to a U.S. label in the wake of Shonen Knife and Pizzicato Five.

Formed in 1993, the trio released two albums on the Cardinal label in Japan before hooking up with the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label in 1996. Buffalo Daughter rode a wave of critical acclaim in hipster circles in the late 90s and toured with the likes of Luscious Jackson and Pavement.

After the release of New Rock in 1998, Buffalo Daughter took a break, during which time Grand Royal shut down. When the group re-emerged three years later, it signed a new deal with Toshiba-EMI in Japan and Emperor Norton in the States.

The band's 2001 release I found Buffalo Daughter shedding the "cute" tag American reviewers initially labeled the group.

In 2003, Buffalo Daughter signed with V2 Records and released Pshychic, a 50-minute album consisting of only five tracks. The album was released in Europe in 2004, but no release in the US is yet scheduled.
