Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her
Biography
(Ed. note: To get a good sense of how Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her came to be, read Rock of Japan's interview with the band, where all the information in this biography was taken.)
In 1992, Higurashi Aiha decided to form a band. She asked a friend to come up with her band's name after she had already performed a few gigs.
That friend chose the song title "Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her" from XTC's The Big Express album, and Higurashi figured the long name would be memorable for audiences.
Higurashi then went abroad, studying in New York City and spending six months in London before deciding she wanted to continue playing in her band. She moved back to Tokyo and recruited Koyama Nao to play bass and Karashima Takaharu on drums.
Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her perform very brash, rough-hewned indie rock drawing comparrisons to Sonic Youth, the New York Dolls and PJ Harvey(!). Higurashi also writes all her lyrics in English.
Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her recorded and toured steadily since 1994. Takaharu left the band in 1999, and a year later, Higurashi gave birth.
