The lead singer of the popular group L'Arc~en~Ciel, hyde released two solo albums during a hiatus the band took to pursue individual projects.

hyde's debut solo album, 2002's Roentgen, was a moody contrast to L'Arc~en~Ciel's bright rock. His second album, 2003's 666, found the singer in a more metallic setting.

In December 2003, hyde rejoined his band members in L'Arc~en~Ciel for a reunion tour, and in 2004, L'Arc~en~Ciel resumed its activities, releasing its eight studio album, Smile.
